Sacrifice of Police Martyrs remembered in Udupi District

Udupi: The sacrifices of policemen in the line of duty was marked with solemnity at the Police Commemoration Day held here at Chandu Maidan on Monday, October 21.

A floral tribute was paid by the district police officials for 292 policemen who lost their lives in the past year, the police flag was lowered as a silent prayer was held.

District Sessions Judge Chandrashekar M Joshi was the chief guest of the function. He placed a wreath in honour of the cops who laid down their lives for the country.

Superintendent of Police Nisha James said that the Martyrs’ day marks the attack by Chinese forces on the police team patrolling at the high altitude of 4,681 meters above sea level adjoining the Indo-China border on October 21, 1959.

Though armed only with rifles, ten policemen were killed and nine captured by the Chinese troops. Since then, the day marks the sacrifices of the police personnel in the country. A total of 292 police personnel lost their lives while on duty from July 2018 to August 2019, she said.

Addressing the gathering District Sessions Judge Chandrashekar M Joshi said, “The country would always remember the sacrifices made by the policemen for protecting the lives and property of the people. He called the police personnel to rededicate themselves for their noble responsibilities. People should salute them every day for the kind of service they render to safeguard peace, life and property in the society.
