Sage of Literacy Harekala Hajabba Bags Ramagovinda Award

Mysuru: Harekala Hajabba, a humble fruit-vendor hailing from the outskirts of Mangaluru, has yet another feather in his cap.

He wanted the children of his village to have education, which he himself was deprived of in his childhood. With this aim in mind, he poured all his earnings from fruit vending business into the project of a school, which has grown into a mighty tree.

Added to his long line-up of awards is the Ramagovinda award instituted by D Ramabai Charitable Foundation and M Gopinath Shenoy Trust in Mysuru.

The award carries a cash purse of Rs 3 lakh. It was presented to Hajabba at a function organized in the Kalabhavan auditorium in Mysuru on Sunday.

Speaking about the award and the recipient, DK deputy commissioner A B Ibrahim said that Hajabba, by bagging the award, had brought honour to the district. He wished that he would win more of such awards.

A much-spoken-about, but very sad, fact of Hajabba’s life was that even if he had won so many awards, there was no suitable place to display them in his old house.

The United Christian Association of Mangaluru recently built a new concrete house for him and dedicated to him. It was widely appreciated as a glowing example of communal harmony.

This guy is incredible and inspiring to all of us.

Shaikh – Read this report and ask yourself why your community failed to build him a decent house? Is there a lack of focus on education in your community? It was a Christian association who finally built him a decent place to live. Please don’t get back to your old habit and start blaming Modi for this!!!
