Sahyadri Sanchaya Holds ‘Kanana Rodana’ to Save Western Ghats, ‘NOTA’ Campaign
Mangaluru: To teach a befitting lesson to the elected representatives for taking up the Yettinahole project, the members of Sahyadri Sanchaya held “Kanana Rodana”, to retain the Western Ghats and highlight the “NOTA Campaign in front of the DC office here on January 26.
The protesters wore black and green masks during the protest.
convener of the Sahyadri Sanchaya Dinesh Holla said, “In Dakshina Kannada district, be it the Yettinahole project or the construction of the DC office many trees have been felled. Because of the felling of trees, we face water shortage in our district. The Netravati river is drying but the District administration or the government is not taking any measures to retain the forests. If we will not take any measures now, in the coming days we will face acute water shortage in the district. To bring awareness to the people we have staged the protest “Kanana Rodana”.”
Dinesh Holla further said, “To construct the DC office many trees were axed. After two days when we went to the spot, we saw the birds crying and searching for their nests. In spite of our request to the government to shift the DC office to some other place, the District administration was adamant in constructing the DC office at the same spot. We had also requested the concerned authorities to oppose the project in Padil.”
Dinesh Holla also said, “The forest department has no concern for safeguarding the forests and the animals. We had demanded a Helicopter with the Forest Minister to cope with the forest fires, but he laughed at us and said, “Ours is not a rich country to deploy Helicopters to fight forest fires”. The district minister in-charge has no concern towards retaining the forests.”
A skit depicting the felling of trees, and the eggs of the birds falling from the branches of trees and hatching on the ground was displayed.
Harikrishna Punaroor, Harish Adyar, Dinesh Kodialbail, Sashidhar Shetty, Yathis Salian, Dr Annayya Kulal and others were also present.
