Samarth of Basrur Wins FIDE World Jr Chess Championship for Disabled-USA

Mangaluru: FIDE World Junior Chess Championship for the Disabled was held at Florida, USA from 22nd to 28 th June 2017 in which Samarth Jagadish Rao of Basrur, near Udupi has adorn the championship. Earlier he had secured many prizes in international competitions. Recently he has secured the Gold and bronze Medals in the competitions held at Slovakia.

This is the 1st World Junior Chess Championship for the Disabled held in Orlando, Florida, USA. All eligible participants are approved by the FIDE Commission “Chess for the Disabled” (DIS). The FIDE World Junior Chess Championship for the Disabled is an event only for disabled chess players who are under 20 years old as of June 22, 2017. Each relevant chess association (IBCA, IPCA, ICCD) regulates the conditions of their participation. The FIDE World Junior Chess Championship for the Disabled is held as an individual open tournament. The event provides a special recognition to the top players under 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18 & 20. The competition is played as a 7-round Swiss tournament.

Samarth is the son of Jagadish Rao, employed at Syndicate Bank, Honnavara Branch and Vinutha, a college lecturer. His sister Sanvi is extending her helping hand in managing Samarth’s physical disability. He is studying in PUC at SDM PU College, Honnavar. His parents have to carry him to the competition locations since he is unable to walk.

Samarth has registered 6 wins out of 7 games played in the tournament. He has defeated the players of Puerto Rico, Belgium, Uganda and USA. However, he lost an only game against Jimmer of Germany. Sports Authority of India had sponsored the travel expenditures, Nandi Kannada Okkoota has sponsored the food and other expenses, and All India Chess Federation and Chess Federation for Physically disabled also extended their helping hand for his trip.
