Sand Row: Truck Owners, Labourers try to Gherao DC Office

Udupi: The strike call given by the owners and operators of trucks and tippers carrying sand demanding a solution to the problem of sand extraction in Udupi district entered the Fifth day on Monday, October 22.
On Sunday Truck owners had warned the district minister in-charge, Dr Jayamala, that if the sand problem not cleared they would gherao the deputy commissioner’s office. According to the warning, the Truck owners tried took out their vehicles to the Deputy Commissioner’s Office on Sunday midnight.
As the deputy commissioner received the information she instructed the Superintendent of Police to take action against the truck owners. The SP immediately acted and stopped the trucks near Brahmavar and parked them on the side of NH 66.
On Monday Hundreds of Truck owners and Building workers gathered near the DC office Manipal and staged a protest against the Deputy Commissioner.
Speaking to media persons Raghavendra Shetty said that the Deputy Commissioner was responsible for the sand problem in Udupi District. She should have taken Action to resolve the sand issue immediately. The district administration should issue license to all the 170 leaseholders, he said.
The Udupi District police have been deployed in and around of Deputy Commissioner’s office. The police have installed Barricades on the road leading to the DC office. Additional SP Kumarchandra, DySP Jaishanker and other police officials are personally monitoring the situation.
