Saudi Arabia: Mall roof collapses on reopening day

Cairo: The roof of a shopping centre in the Saudi eastern province of Qatif partially collapsed on the first day of its reopening, as life is returning to normal in Saudi Arabia after a three-month lockdown.

The centre was evacuated following the incident and there were no casualties, the Saudi civil defence said on its Twitter.

The partial collapse of the artificial ceiling occurred inside the lobby of the City Mall in Qatif Sunday evening, according to the service.

An investigation is under way to determine the cause of the incident.

On Sunday, a nationwide curfew was fully lifted across Saudi Arabia where all businesses resumed work amid strict preventive measures to stem the spread of the novel coronavirus.

While relaxing the virus-related restrictions, Saudi Arabia has kept in place a halt to international flights to and from the country, suspending the Umrah journeys and imposed a ban on gatherings of over 50 persons. Various businesses are obliged to abide by social distancing rules as a precaution.
