New Delhi, Sep 29 (IANS) The Supreme Court on Tuesday declined a plea by the BCCI seeking recall of its order barring the cricketing body’s former president N.Srinivasan from contesting its election so long he was in a situation of conflict of interest situation as an owner of IPL franchise Chennai Super Kings (CSK).
A bench of Justice T.S.Thakur and Justice Fakkir Mohamed Ibrahim Kalifulla rejected the plea for the recall of the order by circulation in their chambers.
The review plea was filed in February this year but only taken up on Tuesday.
The apex court by its January order, while making Srinivasan ineligible for contesting election of the BCCI on account of being in conflict of interest situation, had read down the amendment to BCCI Rule 6.2.4 that excluded events like the Indian Premier League or Champions League from the conflict of interest clause.
It had said that it made “clear that the disqualification for contesting elections applicable to those who are holding any commercial interest in BCCI events shall hold good and continue till such time the person concerned holds such commercial interest or till the committee considers and awards suitable punishment to those liable for the same; whichever is later”.
The court had also appointed a three member committee of former apex court judges headed by the former chief justice R.M. Lodha to decide the quantum of punishment that had to be awarded to his son-in-law Gurunath Meiyappan and Rajasthan Royal co-owner Raj Kundra for their involvement in betting during IPL 2013.
Other members of the committee were Justice Ashok Bhan and Justice R.V.Raveendran. The court had given them gave the committee six months time to complete the task entrusted to it.
