Scientific Research a must for nation building – Surendra Shetty

Mangaluru: Speaking at the inauguration of “Hands on Cell culture workshop” held at Kasturba Hospital, Attavar, Pro-Vice Chancellor of Manipal University, Dr V Surendra Shetty urged the young scientific researchers to rise to the occasion to enhance the quality of research that is noticed by national and international scientific community. He mentioned that there is a need to increase the critical mass of researchers to be on par with the developed nations enable us to contribute significantly to nation building.

The workshop “Hands on training in Cell Culture” was undertaken on 27th and 28th of September, by Kasturba Medical College, Mangaluru along with School of Life Sciences, Manipal. Dr M Venkatraya Prabhu, Dean of Kasturba Medical College, Mangaluru, who was present on the occasion, said that there is a renewed vigor in the researchers at the University to discover, publish and to help the society at large. He indicated that several recognitions to the scientists for their discovery such as the impending annual Noble prize are eagerly watched and savored by the scientific community. Dr Anand Venugopal, Medical superintendent of KMC Hospitals, Mangaluru was also present and addressed the gathering. Dr K Satyamoorthy, Director of School of Life Sciences, Manipal University, Manipal, provided an overview of the event and highlighted the significance of inculcating research culture early in the career path.

The two-day hands-on workshop in cell culture techniques attracted significant enthusiasm and participation among the research fraternity in the coastal Karnataka region. Dr Satish Rao, School of Life Sciences provided a detailed description of intricacies of the cell culture and narrated several examples to achieve the success in the culture procedures. The workshop provided knowledge and hands-on practice to the participants which were ably provided by reputed researchers such as Dr K Shamaprasad, Dr Bharat Prasad, Rekha Nayak, Shoba and Chetan Kumar of School of Life Sciences, Manipal University, Manipal. Dr M Chakrapani and Dr B Unnikrishnan Associate Deans of Kasturba Medical College, Mangaluru, under whose direction the workshop was conducted, participated in the valedictory function and provided the certificates.
