Sea erosion a Threat to many Houses in Udupi

Udupi: Incessant rains since the past few days in the district have increased the threat from sea erosion in various places of the district.

Many coconut trees have been washed away due to the waves. Villagers in Padukere have been largely affected due to the waves, which have started to hit the roads connecting Padukere to the rest of the district. The boulders used to check sea erosion are also being proved ineffective and are being swallowed by the waves. Coconut trees and a few houses are facing the threat of destruction. Sea water has also entered a few houses in Padukere. Saline water has also gushed into low-lying areas.

Sea erosion in Maravanthe of Kundapur Taluk has been going on since Tuesday due to the breakwater construction in Gangolli. Sea erosion has also started in Kodibengre and Thottam Vadabhandeshwara areas of Udupi Taluk.

Residents have protested against the attitude of authorities. The district administration has been dumping large boulders here during every monsoon for over three decades to protect the land from erosion in the absence of any permanent solution to this annual threat. The residents urged the authorities to find a permanent solution to the problem.

The district has received an overall 93.6 mm rainfall for the last 24 hours. Udupi taluk recorded 63.5 mm rain, while Kundapur recorded 117.6 mm and Karkala received 99.6 mm of rainfall. The water-level in rivers have increased as a result and low-lying areas in the district have been inundated.
