Sexual Assault on Married Woman – Convict Gets 7-year Jail
Mangaluru: The sixth additional district and sessions court here has sentenced Iqbal (22) of Karkarabettu of Ujire in Beltangady taluk to seven years’ imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 in a sexual assault case.
On a day in March 2014, when the husband had gone out on work, Iqbal had come to his house and asked his wife for water. As she got inside, he too followed her and sexually assaulted her.
He also threatened to kill if she disclosed the matter. She phoned her husband and informed him of the assault.
A complaint was filed in the Beltangady town station and the police subsequently filed a chargesheet in the court. The Mangaluru court held him guilty on Wednesday and reserved the judgement to be pronounced on Friday. As such, the quantum of punishment was read out on the day.
He was convicted under section 376 of the IPC. An additional jail term of six months under section 448 for illegal trespass into the house has also been pronounced.
The judge has also ruled that an amount of Rs 8,000 be given as relief to the victim and instructed the district legal services authority to secure adequate compensation from the state government’s relief fund.
Public prosecutor Judith O M Crasta argued for the prosecution.
