Mangaluru: A growing problem not only in India but all over the globe is that students are more stressed than ever. In fact, India has one of the highest rates of suicides among people aged between 15 and 29. Although the reasons are myriad but failure in examination, unemployment, and depression are some the reasons why people put their life at risk. And one among depression is that when children are left back in their hometown or other parts of India, while their parents are employed abroad, and hardly interact or communicate with their siblings, due to their hectic work schedule or short vacations.

Another reason for the common cause of concern is the pressure from parents to do well in the class XII board exams and even before that. There have been many incidents in the past where students have committed suicide during exams and on the result day. But what can be so extreme that students decide to end their life? It is learnt that students suffer from anxiety and traumatic disorder relating to fear of examination. The fear factor is the reason why students suffer from anxiety, depression, and other consequences. And the fear not only comes from the school but also from parents, who go to extreme levels to push their children into getting better grades. The best time of the life that students are supposed to enjoy and cherish is the time they are pushed to extreme levels which can be overwhelming for many.

And here is one case of depression that a young journalism student had committed suicide for not getting too much love and attention from her parents who live in Dubai. The victim, Sophia Damini, a fourth-semester journalism student of a private college in Bengaluru, was found dead in her hostel room, on January 23, with a suicide note and an empty bottle of sleeping pills. A case has been filed at the Kothanur Police Station, and the body has been sent to Ambedkar Hospital for Post Mortem. Sophia had lived in Bengaluru for the last two years, and on the day she committed suicide, she had told her roommates that she would not attend classes. So her roommates left for class leaving her behind in the room, only to find her dead when they returned back to their room in the evening.

Sources reveal that Sophia hailing from Mumbai was found dead in the sleeping position, and an empty bottle of sleeping pills was found near to her, and also a suicide note, as to why she committed suicide. Police have informed her parents in the Gulf, and they are on their way to Bengaluru. Sophia in her suicide letter has mentioned that she took the extreme step to end her life because of loneliness, and even though her parents sent her enough money from Gulf, but she got no love and concern from them.

“Feeling of loneliness is the reason for my suicide. My father and mother are living in Dubai. My parents, who used to send me money, never bothered to ask me about my well-being. I was deprived of their love. I am suffering from mental depression. I am responsible for my death,” stated the suicide note, as per sources.
