Shirva Church Team bags Overall Championship in Diocese-level Lourdes Sports Meet Kanajar-2K18
Udupi: Our Lady of Health Church Shirva team bagged the overall championship in Udupi diocese level sports meet organized by Parish pastoral council and ICYM of Lourdes Church, Kanajar at the P.M. Saldanha Memorial Kowdoor Stadium, Ranganapalke-Kanajar on Thursday, October 18.
The Sports meet was inaugurated by Rev Dr Gerald Isaac Lobo Bishop of Udupi Diocese in the morning. In his message, Bishop Gerald Isaac said, “We are not giving importance to physical education when compared to academics. Sports is a tool for cognitive development. We must stress on sports activities that are not being given importance at present. People are not giving priority to physical development. Winning and losing is just a part of the game, what matters is participation.” he said.
Sports develops discipline and helps individuals to become responsible citizens. Sports help to develop both physical and mental fitness, he added.
Stadium owner Lawrence Saldanha, Entrepreneur John D’Silva, Sportsperson Jackson D’Souza Basrur, PET Teachers Fredrick Rebello and Edwin Mendonca were honoured on the occasion.
Karkala Deanery dean Fr Joshwy Fernandes, Kanajar Church Parish Priest Fr Alexander Louis, Entrepreneur Avelin Lewis, John D’Silva, Felix Mathias, ZP member Wilson Rodrigues, ICYM Diocese president Dion D’Souza, Church Pastoral Council Vice-president Ambrose Lobo, Secretary Robert Menezes, ICYM Kanajar president Edison Saldanha and others were present.
After the formal function, the most awaited track and field events began. The participants actively participated in both track and field events. 985 sportspersons from 40 parishes of Udupi Diocese participated in the sports meet.
In the closing function, Msgr Baptist Menezes Vicar General of Udupi Diocese distributed the prizes and complimented the organizers for the successful conduct of the sports meet.
