Sorake lays foundation stone to Modern District Library
Udupi: The foundation stone laying ceremony of City and District Library building and Competitive Studies Research Center was held near Town hall, Ajjarkad here, on May 7.
The programme began with an invocation, Chief Librarian of the District Library, C J Venkatesh welcomed the gathering. Director of Public Library Department, Bengaluru, Dr Sathish Kumar S Hosamani delivered the introductory remarks.
District Minister In-charge of Udupi, Vinay Kumar Sorake laid the foundation stone for the City and District Library building and Competitive Studies Research Center by unveiling the plaque.
In his inaugural message Vinay Kumar Sorake said that today Udupi district is ahead in sectors such as hospitality, education and other fields. Various Gram Panchayats are facing shortage of buildings for libraries to function. “The library department can make use of school buildings, which will be vacant after some schools shut down due to shortage of students,” he added.
The new library will come up in a three-floor building which will be constructed next the Town Hall. The building will consist of a basement with parking and store room, ground floor with an office of the central library and a reading room, first floor which will have an office of the district library and reading room and the second floor which will have competitive exam training centre and computer lab basically for browsing. The cost of the project is Rs 5.18 crore and is designed by Nirmithi Kendra.
Pramod Madhwaraj MLA Udupi presided over the function. President Udupi Zilla Panchyat, Dinakar Babu, President of Udupi City Muncipal Corporation, Meenakshi Madhava Bannaje, CEO Udupi Zilla Panchayat, Priyanka Mary Francis, Vice President CMC Udupi, Sandhya Kumari, Ramesh Kanchan, Vasanthi Shetty, Narayana Kundar and others were present.
