SP Nimbargi Instructs all Police Station Heads to Raid Matka joints in District
Udupi: After a few months of respite, the citizens have once again during the weekly phone-in programme complained to the district police superintendent about the rampant sale of illegal liquor and Matka.
Calls were received from Kundapur, Gangolli, Uppunda, Byndoor and Kollur. The SP said that due to the elections and other activities, the officers were not able to concentrate on the Matka activities. This might have caused a rise in Matka cases. Increase in Matka activities are posing a threat to the law and order mechanism in the district, involvement in Matka activities has become a profitable business. Nimbargi said that an inquiry is underway and the department is carefully looking into the activities of those who are out on bail after being arrested for their involvement in Matka cases. The department will start a special drive and conduct raids at Matka joints from Saturday, he added.
A complaint was made about ganja being supplied in the Malpe Police Station limits. The SP assured the caller that the problem would be solved in a day.
There was a complaint about illegal parking at Santhekatte, Udupi and others areas on the road. A caller from Udupi complained about the irregular parking near Ashirvad theatre. Another caller said that some persons were riding two-wheelers with loud horns generating a lot of noise in Udupi city limits. This was troubling the common people. Nimbargi replied that action would be taken. He also instructed the Udupi CPI to begin a drive against shrill horns from Saturday.
Nimbargi told reporters that in the past two weeks, as many as 6 arrests were made in 5 cases filed for playing Matka, 17 arrests in 3 gambling cases, 7 arrests for the sale of illegal liquor, 3 arrests in NDPS case. Also, 140 cases were registered under COTPA, 23 for drunk driving, 146 cases for the use of shrill horns, 49 cases for speaking on mobile while riding, 68 cases for over speeding, 3627 cases for violation of riding without helmets and 1,654 cases under the Motor Vehicle Acts were registered in the district.
