SP Nisha James Warns Stern action against illegal sand mining
Udupi: Superintendent of Police (Udupi District) Nisha James warned that if any illegal sand extraction from the river beds in CRZ areas takes place, stringent action will be taken against the offenders.
She was speaking with media persons during the weekly phone-in programme at the SP office on Friday. About the stone pelting incident at Kundapur Rural Police Station by alleged sand extractors, she said, “This case has been taken seriously. The police department will actively take legal action against those trying to take the law into their own hands. Already 8 accused have been arrested and released on bail. The police department will keep a close watch against the accused and also open rowdy sheet against them. We have also booked 107 cases against them.”
James further said, “Complaints have reached my office regarding illegal sand mining through motorized boats which is also destroying the mangroves. I had sent strict instructions to the police officials to initiate action against illegal sand extraction. Police personnel, along with mines and geology department, will continue conducting raids on illegal sand extraction and sand storage points in the district. From January to May, a total of 44 cases have been booked against illegal sand extraction in the district.”
