Speeding Car Plunges into a Private Property- Driver Flees from the Accident Scene
Speeding Car Plunges into a Private Property- Driver and 4 other occupants in the car Flee from the Accident Scene without informing the Property owner
Mangaluru : Mr Pinto and his wife of “Milly’s Compound” on Kadri Kambla Road going towards KPT/Bejai, when they woke up in the morning had a surprise visitor in the front yard- it was not a snake, or a stray dog or cow, or a human being- but surprisingly was a damaged car landed very close to their home porch. But the bad part is that, except for the damaged car and broken car parts scattered here and there, there was no sign of the car driver nor its occupants. Witnesses say that cops had come and did the investigation while the car driver and occupants were present, but until next day afternoon no one had contacted the property owner. On witness said that the driver might have made a steep turn seeing couple of police vehicles that were parked on that road- but it seemed like no one was injured, except for 75% damage to the car.
In spite of recent random checks by the City’s traffic cops for driving under the influence of alcohol or rash driving, but that hasn’t stopped from accidents happening in late hours of night- and in many cases the cops play games in such cases, depending on how influential or how rich the driver involved in that accident is. As per the traffic law, in Hit and Run cases, or leaving the scene of accident, one is guilty of careless and rash driving and then fleeing the scene. The person is careless and disdain of the driving norms and rules may result in the case being classified as a homicide not amounting to murder; S 304 IPC , causing death by negligence, maximum punishment, two years. In European and Gulf countries, leaving the scene of accident will land you in jail for years.
Hit and run can also be explained as the liability of a driver of any vehicle who is involved in a collision which damages vehicle or property of any other person or injures any other person(s) or both and who runs away without giving his name and license number as prescribed by statute to the injured party, witness or any law enforcement officer. It is a situation where the identity of the vehicle responsible for the accident is not traceable. As the identity of the driver or the owner is not traceable, a fixed amount of compensation is given to the victim or the legal representatives of the victim from funds created by the government. The claimant receives 25,000/- and 12,500/- in situation of death and grievous injury respectively. So evidently, the compensation amount reduces by half if the driver or the car cannot be located. Therefore it is imperative to attempt to locate the wrong doer.
Speaking to Team Mangalorean, Mr Pinto said, “We came to know about this accident only in the morning. Even our tenants didn’t inform us even though they were awake and saw the accident happening at midnight. The car had plunged into our compound knocking down a brand new gate which was built recently. It’s kind of scary when you look at the fate of the car, and such kind of accidents could kill innocent people. Other than severe damage to the car, it looks like there was no severe injuries to the occupants and driver of the car. I only hope the police will do the needful, and get us all the damages expenses due to this accident”.
Looking at the car, the license plates, both the front and back side have been removed- something fishy going on . And like I said in the beginning, if the car owner is influential and a rich dude, this accident case will be closed without any severe consequences. Oh well- that’s how our CORRUPT system works in Mangaluru?
