Spread Narayana Guru and Koti Chennaya Teachings – B K Hariprasad
Udupi: The ideals and teachings propagated by Sree Narayana Guru and Koti Chennaya should be spread across the world to arrest the challenges posed by religious extremism said B K Hariprasad Rajya Sabha member.
He was speaking after inaugurating the Garodi Gurikara convention organised by the Udupi district Billava Vedike at the Town Hall Udupi on Sunday, April 23.
Untouchability and social evils still prevail across the country. There is still no entry into Temples for many people of the lower caste Dalits. He lamented that untouchability was still present in the country although it has been eradicated to a large extent in social life by the efforts of reformers and spiritual leaders of Garodi.
The Billava community has achieved political strength but failed to achieve social and economic freedom of our community. Many people are coming forward to build temples but there is no one who shows interest to build an educational institution. Education is the only tool that can eradicate poverty and respond to challenges of social and economic development of the community. Although the literacy rate has gone up since Independence, the fact that 50 percent of women being illiterate is a major concern.
We have elected many Billava representatives but failed to build education institutions for the children of our community. This is the right time to think about our own educational institutions. Importance should be given to leadership, he added.
MLC Kota Shrinivas Poojary presided over the function, Janapada scholar Bannanje Babu Ameen and Damodhar Kalmadi were felicitated on the occasion.
Karkala MLA Sunil Kumar delivered the keynote address, former MLA Raghupathi Bhat, CMC President Meenakshi Madhava Bannanje, BJP district Chief Mattar Rathnakar Hegde, B N Shanker Poojary, Suryodaya Perampalli and others were present.
