SRLM Centres to Redefine Waste Management in District – Pramod Madhwaraj
Udupi: Minister Pramod Madhwaraj inaugurated the countdown for Swacch Bharath Mission – Udupi a programme aimed at turning waste into resource. The programme was organised at Rajathadri, Manipal here on August 16.
Minister Pramod Madhwaraj speaking on the occasion said that the waste collected from houses and commercial establishments will be segregated under the scheme. The self help groups will be collecting waste from houses and commercial establishments twice a day. Two buckets of different colours will be given to the people to dump waste. Organic waste needs to be dumped in the green bucket and the inorganic waste in the red bucket. The Self Help groups will collect the waste twice a day in tricycles. Food items like rice and vegetable waste which is fit for consumption of animals will be separated. People who talk about Cow protection can utilise the same.
The plastic waste and other waste materials will be utilised for reuse after separation.
Under this programme the waste collected will be brought to SRLM Centres (Solid and Liquid Resource Management Centre). The centre is a shed or a space setup in every village to segregate waste. If the space for setting up the centre is not available old buildings will be utilised. The first phase of waste segregation will be held using red and green bucket by households. The second phase of waste segregation will be held in the SRLM centres. Plastic materials and other materials will be stored in the warehouse for sale which is segregated from the second phase.
Other wet waste like meat etc can be converted into compost or if any NGO’s come forward for dog shelters it can be used. The waste water collected from kitchens should be utilised for growing Banana plants. Nurseries will be advised to supply banana plants to people. The water from drainage will be utilised for the growth of Cana plants.
Ducks can be reared near lakes, fish waste can be effectively utilised here. The eggs of ducks have good demand.
The district level officials and peoples representatives from local bodies are given two days of intensive training. 400 members of the self-help groups are also given intensive training on waste management. The training sessions are also organised for the trading community and commercial establishments.
Deputy Commissioner Priyanka Mary Francis said that Swacch Bharat Mission – Udupi has been initially launched on August 15, volunteers have been visiting the houses to survey waste management. The data collected will be utilised for the creation of DPR to setup SLRM centres. As the pilot project, the project will be started in Varamballi, Gangolli and Nitte gram panchayats. Fine amounting to Rs 25,000 will be imposed on people who burn plastic waste. Solid Waste Management Rules will be effectively implemented in the district, she added.
All villages will be adopted under SRLM and the project will be completed by 2 October 2018.
