St Aloysius B. Ed College observes Autism Day

Mangaluru: St Aloysius B. Ed College, a leading institute of teacher education of the city organized World Autism Day here. Rev. Sr Maria Jyothi AC, Coordinator, Veronica Vihar, a Home for the Disabled Adults, Maryhill, Mangaluru, was the Chief Guest. In her speech, she said, “Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a developmental disorder. It is characterized by a broad range of challenges with social skills, repetitive behaviours, speech and nonverbal communication. Autistic individuals have both strengths and weaknesses like any normal child.

Schools everywhere should promote the inclusion of such children into the educational environment. Parents and teachers have to know autism is a disorder or a disability rather than a disease so that they will be able to embrace their differences”. She further said, tolerance, flexibility and love are the three life skills essential to deal with the autistic child. Children with autism are less flexible in their interests. Therefore, our choice should be to focus not on our own preferences, but on theirs.

The programme began with the invoking of God’s blessings by Eric and the group. Deepika and group performed the welcome dance. Mokshitha rendered the welcome address. Shivani highlighted the significance of autism day. Nikitha D’Souza introduced the chief guest.
