St Mary’s Orthodox Cathedral celebrates Blessed Padre Noronha’s Feast

Udupi: The 81st Memorial Feast of Fr. R.Z. Noronha, the Saintly Father of Brahmavar, who was declared as Blessed by the Catholicos (Supreme Head / Pope of Indian Orthodox Church) in 2016, was held on July 22nd & 23rd in a grand and pompous manner at St Mary’s Orthodox Cathedral, Brahmavar, where he is entombed.

Geevarghese Mar Coorilos, Metropolitan-Bombay Diocese, was the Chief Celebrant on this occasion.

The feast began on Saturday 22nd of July with receiving of “Festam vojem / Hore Kannike” bought by St Thomas Church, Sastan and St Peter & Paul Church, Kurady. A 3 km long procession was taken from the Cathedral through the Brahmavar town; where more than 300 people participated. Fr Noronha is venerated by the locals belonging to all faith, caste & creed. The procession was received with great joy, people humbly bowed their heads to the portrait of their beloved ‘Padre Noronha’.

The service of Saturday concluded with Vespers and sermon delivered by Mar Coorilos.

On Sunday, 23rd of July, the Festal Holy Mass was celebrated. Mar Coorilos was assisted in the celebration of the Mass by Fr Lawrence D’Souza and Fr David Crasta, both the Asst. Vicars of St Mary’s Cathedral, Brahmavar,

In the Homily delivered during the Mass by Mar Coorilos, he recounted the great efforts of Blessed Alvares Mar Julius and Blessed Noronha, the two stalwarts of Brahmavar Church. Mar Coorilos stated Fr Noronha, suffered much humiliation, insult and suffering at the hands of powerful authorities. Yet, today God has raised Padre Noronha to be a blessed Saint. Hence, the life of Padre Noronha should be greatly meditated upon, for it is not the worldly acclamation, but God and His righteousness that brings true glory to us. After the Mass, incense and prayers were offered at the tomb of Padre Noronha.

During the occasion, high scoring students were felicitated and scholarships were distributed. Mar Coorilos was also felicitated and presented with a portrait of Padre Noronha.

More than 2500 faithful participated and on both days food was served to all. This year’s sponsors were Michael Lewis & Fly., Brahmavar.

Fr. Issac C.A., Vicar General delivered the vote of thanks. Fr Abraham Kuriakose, Fr. Noel Lewis and Fr Joseph Chacko were also present.
