Following is the briefing about the “Dental Surgical Microscope” by Dr Kundabala Shenoy- Professor, dept of Conservative Dentistry and Endodontics, MCODS;

Today we inaugurated the dental surgical microscope clinic with our 3rd and latest microscope. Let me tell you how we procured this state of the art microscope. It all started about four years ago when my colleagues in dept. of PHD, Dr. Ramya Shenoy got me to apply for a research and infrastructural improvement fund from Vision Group of Science and technology, Govt. Of Karnataka. We both applied for grants and both of us were fortunate enough to be awarded grants. So I wish to profusely thank her. My project was on dental education and we bought lot of equipment under this grant and submitted a good project which convinced VGST to award us the 2nd grant. When I told the VGST officials the money is not enough to buy my dream instrument, they suggested to go for University support. When I put forward this to our Dean, he was enthusiastic and encouraged me to go to university for help. He laid the ground work at the university prior to my meeting with our Vice Chancellor. When I went to meet our vice-chancellor, Dr. Vinod Bhat, he immediately sanctioned the necessary additional fund. That’s how we got this 3rd and the best microscope for the department.

We planned to buy the latest highly compact Carl Zeiss dental S 100 Pico surgical microscope with all the accessories, so that it will help in documentation, communication, education, patient care and research. Our institution is the first one among the dental colleges of India to buy this latest, sleek, model easy to operate, easy to maintain, with best optics, integrated high quality HD video camera showing with real life pictures. OPMI Pico with its apochromatic coatings makes details and fine structures clearly visible, high contrast, true color images. Camera has 5 phase changer, added adapter for assistant observation, can be connected to monitor for easy observation of surgery by students.

With best optics, Carl Zeiss gives best quality visualization of operating site. Best ergonomics, excellent illumination with xenon, halogen and LED light, If you look through Carl Zeiss microscope, operator can see heaven with ease. It helps to do the skilled work with highest precision. We are lucky to procure this tool which will help us in our day to day patient care, research and patient and student education. On behalf of Department of Conservative Dentistry and Endodontics and MCODS, Mangaluru, I profusely thank VGST, Govt of Karnataka and MAHE Manipal”.
