Status Quo on Renaming LHH Road ordered by Karnataka High Court

Mangaluru: The ‘Light House Hill Road’ renaming to ‘St Aloysius College Road’ Vs ‘Mulky Sundar Ram Shetty Road’ issue which was not in the news for quite sometime, is back on the headlines again- and this time the High Court playing an important role in it. Chief Justice Subhro Kamal Mukherjee and Justice P S Dinesh Kumar, the duo who head the division bench of Karnataka High Court have directed all concerned to maintain status quo with regard to name of Light House Hill Road as on May 24, 2017 till pendency of writ appeal. Interim order was issued on September 22 in response to writ appeal (5627-5628/2017) filed by Vijaya Bank Workers’ Organization (VBWO) and Karunakar Shetty, former president of Vijaya Bank Workers’ Organization (VBWO).

Karunakar Shetty in a statement to the media has stated that the High Court has vacated the stay on renaming of Light House Hill (LHH) Road after Mulki Sundar Ram Shetty, former CMD of Vijaya Bank and that status quo be maintained. He has also stated that the High Court has also stayed writ petition (34038-34038/2017) filed by Mangaluru City South MLA J R Lobo against order issued by the under-secretary, Urban Development department on May 24, 2017 naming LHH Road after Mulki Sundar Ram Shetty Road.

As per Shetty the HC has also served notice on MLA JR Lobo with regard to his writ petition, and the HC in its interim order has also directed all concerned, including the appellants – VBWO and himself and the respondents – the state government represented by the chief secretary, Deputy Commissioner, Dakshina Kannada District, MCC Commissioner, Mangaluru City Corporation, and the planning officer, District Town Planning Office, DK – to maintain status quo on naming the road.

Due to this interim order the government at least now cannot nullify the original resolution adopted by MCC in naming stretch of road from Ambedkar Circle to Catholic Club after Mulki Sundar Ram Shetty. And if respondents fail to file their reply as stipulated in the interim order, HC is bound to dispose the case in our favour,” according to Karunakar Shetty.

It should be noted that VBWO had planned to unveil the plaque naming “Light House Hill Road” after “Mulky Sundar Ram Shetty” on July 2, 2017, but due to the writ petition filed by MLA Lobo, resulting in stay order by the government, the unveiling ceremony was cancelled.
