Speaking to mangalorean.com Director of Pilikula Nisarga Dhama H Jayaprakash Bhandary said, “On June 25 night, due to the rain a tree had uprooted and fell on the compound wall in Pilikula. On June 26, a pack of stray dogs entered the compound through the fallen wall and attacked the barking deer. When the staff noticed it, they rushed to rescue the barking deer. But by that time the stray dogs had killed 10 of them.”

Bhandary further said, “Five years ago we had rescued four of the barking deer which had bred and multiplied to 40. We thought of retaining ten of them at the biological park and release the rest into the forest. But unfortunately, the dogs attacked the barking deer, killing ten and critically injuring five other. The injured are being treated.”

Bhandary also said, “Once all the barking deer get well, we will keep 10 of them and release the others into the forest.”
