Students demand resumption of classes in Udupi Main School

Udupi: The students of the 131 year old Mahatma Gandhi Model Higher Primary School (Main School), Udupi warned of going on a hunger strike if the order of shifting them to the North School and Indiranagar School is not revoked.

The officials of the Education Department, Udupi had shifted the students from Mahatma Gandhi Model Higher Primary School, to the North School as the building was on the verge of collapse. 70 students who were studying in the school were shifted to the North and Indiranagar School.

Some students who were unhappy of being shifted returned to their old school and have now demanded the authorities to address the issue and resume the classes.

The action of shifting the students from the 131 year old Mahatma Gandhi Model Higher Primary School in Udupi has angered the old students who say that the idea behind it is to provide an entrance gate to a private hospital which is coming up near the school, however the authorities say that due to the fear of the building collapsing, students are shifted to the North and Indiranagar School.

A student from the 6th standard says that the old students who had studied in the school have excelled in their careers. Some of the old students include the Peajawar Swamji, TA Pai, Manorama Madhwaraj and UR Rao.

Social Activist Nithyananda Volakadu says that the building is not on the verge of collapse but seems that the authorities have vested interests. Students have expressed their displeasure in attending classes in Indiranagar and the North School, they have said that if the order is not revoked they will go on a hunger strike. The authorities should address the issue soon, he added.
