Sullia: The Mahashivaratri on Feb 17 proved to be a day dark day for 18-year-old Akshita, daughter of Narayana and Saroja of Utrambe of Nalkur village near Guttigar in the taluk.
Narayana is an employee of Shri Kukke Subrahmanya temple and he had gone on duty in the morning. Saroja had gone to visit a relative. Akshita was all alone at home.
A sudden fire is said to have broken out in the afternoon and it engulfed the whole house in a short while. Since it is located far from other houses, the neighbours came to know only when they heard the sound of cracking of hot tiles on the roof. But by then it was too late to extinguish the fire.
The fire brigade was called for. The firemen doused the fire and made a search, Akshita’s body was found in a totally charred state under the debris of the roof that was lying on the floor.
It is thought that Akshita may have been asleep when the fire broke out and there was no scope for to save herself. The cause of fire is not known, although rumours soon began circulating around.
Forensic experts from Bengaluru are expected to arrive on Wednesday to examine the remains of the girl. The Sullia tahsildar, circle police inspector, Subrahmanya ASI and MESCOM personnel also visited and inspected the spot.
