Sullia: Officials from the child development project, assisted by the police and other officials, have stalled a child marriage which was to take place on April 16.
A girl from Mastikatte near Bellare in the taluk had not completed 18 years. But her marriage had been scheduled to be held on April 16. On receiving advance information, the Bellare gram panchayat, through its child marriage prevention committee, had served a notice on the parents.
But they reportedly declined to accept the notice, obviously because they did not want to miss the opportunity of a good proposal. However, since it would have violated the relevant law,
Hence, on April 15, child development project officer Sukanya, Bellare gram panchayat development officer Chennappa Gowda, village accountant Ranjan and others, accompanied by the police, visited the house of the girl and cautioned the parents not to get the girl married before she attained the legal age of 18 years.
They also obtained a written undertaking to that effect.
