Surangannim Enthralls Ears and Souls at Kalaangann
Mangalore: The rich cultural tapestry of Mangalore was vibrantly showcased during the 278th installment of Mandd Sobhann’s Monthly Theatre series, held at the esteemed Kalaangann in Shaktinagar on February 2nd. A musical extravaganza titled ‘Surangannim’ (melodious songs) featured an impressive performance by 65 dedicated students of the Sur Sobhann Classical Vocal Training, captivating the audience with their talent and passion.
The event commenced with the ceremonial ringing of a bell by young vocalist Rishel Melba Crasta, setting the stage for an evening filled with harmonious melodies. Under the expert direction of Shilpa Cutinha, a renowned Konkani singer with a formal education in Hindustani singing, the children showcased their skills through six enchanting Konkani songs complemented by four classical compositions from the Hindustani tradition.
In a heartwarming display of community involvement, the parents of the performers also delighted the audience with a special song. A group of fourteen children took on the role of emcees, articulating insights about each piece performed and sharing their unique experiences from the training sessions.
The evening was further enriched by a mesmerizing flute performance by Clara Dcunha, captivating the gathering with her artistry. As a mark of appreciation, Mandd Sobhann Gurkar Eric Ozario presented souvenirs to the musicians who contributed to the evening’s success, including Russell Rodrigues on bass guitar, Ashwil Colaco and Glennan Dsouza on keyboards, Sharwin Pinto on guitar, and Senora Cutinha on drums.
The presence of Mandd Sobhann’s notable officials, including President Louis Pinto, Secretary Keron Madtha, and Sumell coordinator Raina Sequeira, underscored the event’s significance. As the evening drew to a close, attendees left not only with a heightened appreciation for the performing arts but also with memories of a night that truly celebrated the musical talents of the youth in Mangalore.
