Mangaluru: A team from Susheg Lifeline comprising Dr. Lavina Noronha, Ms Ratna Pinto, Ms Hilda and Dr. Maizy Fernandes conducted an awareness programme on “ Mental Health Issues in Students: Educators as Gatekeepers “for teachers of St Aloysius Gonzaga School-Mangaluru.
The teachers were enlightened about facts and myths about suicide, risk factors and the causes of suicide among students with real-life case studies. Dr. Lavina Noronha also highlighted that unrealistic expectations from parents and teachers is a prime source of stress for students. She spoke about the warning signs and how teachers can identify them if they are alert. A school suicidal crisis intervention protocol was discussed and it was suggested that the school chalk out a definite policy and guidelines for dealing with suicidal crises.
The next session was conducted by Mrs. Ratna Pinto, who elaborated the two common mental health issues that schools and parents need to watch out for. The common symptoms of Anxiety and Depression among students, the causes and manifestation of the symptoms were discussed so that teachers could identify and refer students needing professional intervention. It was emphasised that timely intervention and professional help would go a long way in helping students cope with these issues.
An exercise called ‘the Worry Tree’ was conducted which drew good response from the teachers. Teachers were asked to conduct the same exercise with students and help them to identify their source of anxiety, worry, apprehensions and difficulties. Teachers were able clarify their doubts and share their own experiences in the discussion session that followed. Mrs. Hilda and Dr. Maizy were also present to help with the programme. The principal of Gonzaga school Mrs. Grace Noronha welcomed the gathering and a teacher Mrs. Aparna proposed a vote of thanks.
