Teachers Learn on ‘Students’ Mental Health: Teachers as Gatekeepers’ from Suicide Helpline

Mangaluru: A sensitization session was held for 45 teachers of Lourdes Central School, Bejai, Mangaluru on the 20th of April, 2018. Dr. Lavina Noronha of Suicide Lifeline was the resource person. The theme of the training was “Students’ Mental Health: Teachers as Gatekeepers” The training session covered the following topics: Suicidal Crisis- warning signs, risk factors, causes, interventions, and role of teachers in the prevention of suicide; Sources of stress for students, anxiety, depression and their management. Dr. Noronha highlighted the role of teachers in identifying students in distress and referring them for timely psychological/medical intervention.

Fr. Robert D’Souza, Principal of the school welcomed the gathering. Sr. Lidwin and Ms. Olga Noronha who were instrumental in organizing the programme were present. The session was followed by clarification of questions and discussion. Ms. Meghana, the school counsellor introduced the team and proposed a vote of thanks. Flyers of suicide lifeline with the lifeline number (0824) 2983444 were distributed.
