Chennai, Sep 5 (IANS) Second seed Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan ended the dream run of wildcard Prajnesh Gunneswaran with a 7-6 (8), 6-4 drubbing to win the singles title in the Raman Sports Trust ITF Men’s Futures tennis tournament here on Saturday.
Nedunchezhiyan, who had lost to Gunneswaran in last week’s Futures tournament, was too keen to avenge the defeat. Nedunchezhiyan’s plan was to attack as much as he could by coming in behind his serve and volleying aggressively.
While returning Gunneswaran’s serve, he also stood up to meet the ball on the rise and make forceful returns. While Nedunchezhiyan Jeevan held serve quite comfortably, Gunneswaran struggled.
The games went with serve and in the ensuing tie-break, Gunneswaran fought all he was worth before Nedunchezhiyan took the set on his second set point.
The loss of the first set seemed to have affected Gunneswaran who dropped serve in the third game and that was sufficient for Nedunchezhiyan to take the second set and the match.
Nedunchezhiyan received $1,440 and 18 ATP points while Gunneswaran picked up $848 and 12 ATP points.
