Tension in Padubidri, stones pelted at Mudarangadi Mosque

Udupi: Tension prevailed in Mudarangadi after stones were thrown at the Sunni Jumma Masjid under the Padubidri Police station limits on Sunday, February 26.

On Saturday, February 25 night, clashes erupted between groups of two communities for a minor incident. The Hindu Jagarana Vedike activists Gheraoed the Padubidri police station demanding the arrest of those who had thrashed a tempo driver in Mudrangadi.

Harris along with others while moving their bikes, were questioned by tempo driver Bhaskar, Later there was a commotion between them and Harris along with the other youth Salman allegedly assaulted Bhaskar. Locals who witnessed the commotion intervened and managed to settle the issue. The local Gram Panchayat President also intervened and the issue was settled.

Later HJV activists Gheraoed the Padubidri police station and demanded the arrest of Harris for assaulting Bhaskar. ASP Vishnuvardhan intervened and urged the protestors to calm down however the protestors demanded the arrest of Harris and others involved in the assault. The protesters were pacified after they were assured of action against the assaulters.

In between some unidentified persons pelted stones at the Sunni Jumma Masjid Mudarangadi. The Mosque administration alleged that window panes were damaged in the attack. The police have arrested some HJV activists in connection with the incident and seized their motorbikes and mobile phones.

Speaking to Mangalorean.com SP In-charge Vishnuvardhan said that the situation is under control. We have deployed additional police force to avoid any untoward incidents from taking place in Padubidri. A platoon of the District Armed Reserve Force has been deployed into service outside the Mosque. The Police have identified 16 places as sensitive additional police including 4 CPI, one DySP and 60 police personnel have been deployed.
