The First Eco-friendly Ganesh Idol that Grows Into a Plant!

Mangaluru: It is truly said ‘God is everywhere’ and in various forms. Keeping this motto in mind, Five friends, Rajesh, Manmohan Surya, Vijay, Rakesh and Keshav were highly motivated to grow plants when they heard about global warming — they all started planting saplings at their home.

The Eco friends groups then decided to do something that would motivate people to plant a tree. While they were brainstorming to get the right idea, it was time for the festival of Ganesh Chaturthi. They observed that almost every other house was welcoming Ganesha idols. However, they noticed that these idols were mostly made of Plaster of Paris, causing more harm to the environment than good.

“We thought of spreading the idea of planting a tree on Ganeshotsav and also using clay idols instead of Plaster of Paris. But then we thought, how about clubbing these two,” says Rajesh, Eco Friends group member.

The friends then started researching on how they could sow a seed in the same pot where the Visarjan was also be done. They tried four different procedures — in two, the plants wouldn’t grow and in the remaining ones, the group was not satisfied with the Visarjan procedure. Thus to learn the basics in gardening, Rajesh and Vijay took a brief course in the subject. “The course in gardening was very useful and helped to realize our dream for transforming my idol of GANAPA into a plant,” says Rajesh with a smile of satisfaction.

Finally, after a research spanning almost two to four months, the team came up with the perfect Ganesha Puja Kit and named it THOTA GANAPA.

Thota Ganapa eco-friendly Ganapa Kit launched by Dr Asha Jyothi Rai on 30 August at 11:00 am at the Sri Durga Savayava Malige near Ayodhya Hotel PVS Circle Kodailbail Mangaluru.

“The aim is to reduce the pollution level and the harmful effect on the environment caused due to the use of Plaster of Paris(POP), The concept helps to contribute to the environment while we celebrate festivals,” says Rajesh, Eco Friends group member.

Rather than immersing the idol in a water body, people will have to water the idol every day so that the idol start melting in the mud pot attached with it and the seed germination process begins. “People should pour three mugs of water every day so that the idol gets converted into the mud. Within a week, the seeds start sprouting.”
