The Lost Chance!

My wife was busy picking up the grocery items at the super market. Since it was the weekend, the supermarket was busy. My wife does not want my contributions into the trolley, though I was pushing it. She does not want my interference in her job just like me. Even if I venture to put some items into the trolley, they would be removed and kept back by my wife at the cash counter and I am seasoned enough to understand that.

I had no specific job to do you see therefore I was lazily pushing the trolley. My son was sitting in the trolley looking all around. Occasionally I would steal a look here and there when I see some nice ladies; the next moment I reassure myself that neither my busy wife nor my four year old son has any clue about my ‘phishing’ out at the supermarket!

Normally my son would sit in the trolley, but today I noticed he was standing. I felt it was a bit risky to stand as he might lose balance. If that happens again my wife would have a point to prove ? that I cannot even do the trolley-pushing job. So I advised him to sit. I told him a couple of times – he would not listen!

I noticed that he was seriously looking at all ladies he came across! I was

…Definitely he was looking at ladies and that too at those who are good looking and grown up….

astonished – at this age he is stealing looks at girls! I thought I was smart to do this with my wife and son around, but my four-year old son outsmarts me!

I started following his actions closely without him noticing me. Yes. Definitely he was looking at ladies and that too at those who are good looking and grown up. There was no doubt. People say inherited qualities show up some time or the other!

“Papa, how about her?” suddenly came a question from him! He was pointing at a lady I was looking at.

I was embarrassed. Even that lady thought there was a definite reference to her. My son was still pointing his finger at her and trying to get my attention.

The lady was pleased at a small boy referring to her.

“What is it my sweet little boy ?” she came near the trolley and touched his cheeks.
“You become my mom?” Asked my son again.
The accent and the childish pronunciation prevented her from getting anything from what he told.

“What did he say?” She asked me. “He mistook you for his mother” I tried to firefight the situation.

“Oh…That’s very sweet. I am your mom..  OK?” she said and went away.

I was still trying to reason out why my son said what he did.  Suddenly I remembered!

This was about three days back. I was home after a busy day only to find both my wife and son in bad mood. There was some problem and my wife had shouted at my son and he did not like that.  As I was about to understand the full picture, there were some arguments between the mother and the son and I was asked to give the judgment without hearing the complete story!

The mother started to give her version of the problem purposefully in raised voice and the small one started crying. I took him up on my lap and started pacifying him. Obviously there was chance of pacifying his mother!!

“Papa, I don’t like mom… She shouted at me” he started crying again.

“Now stop crying. We will do something about it” I told him

“Even I don’t like him, we will bring a new child” yelled my wife from the kitchen.

“I don’t like mom. We will bring a new mom” He shot back and started crying again

“OK… you stop crying, we will bring a new mom” I replied.

As soon as I told this he was pleased and stopped crying at once.

“…but where will we get the new mom?” he was curious to put the decision to action.

I did not know how to reply for a while. He was still looking at me expecting an answer.

“At the super market” I told.

I had forgotten this the very next moment but he hadn’t!

Now I realized he is in fact trying to find a new mom for himself!

He had indeed found one, and what a selection! He deserves compliments for that (oh…my wife reads mangalorean .com occasionally and I do not want to take chances) ? well, other than my wife, she was the best of the lot in the whole of the super market!

I narrated the entire episode to my wife on our way back. Pleasantly surprised, she took my son to task immediately.

“So? you selected a new mom for yourself?you do not want me any more?” she asked him.

“Now do not trouble me any more. If you trouble, we will go to the supermarket and get that mom. Even papa has agreed for her” he was visibly the winner!

“So? Papa. You have also agreed for this” told my wife winking at me

“Not only Papa…  even that mom agreed but we did not bring because we wanted to give you one more chance!” my son was upbeat – he had ultimately found a solution for some serious problems he was facing!

“Last chance for me? Thanks, so nice of you. You’re my darling son” said my wife

“Lost chance for me!! ” I thought…
