I left Ottawa on October 29th, 2005 at 10am, on my way to Mississauga, Ontario, Canada to attend Wilfy Nite on October 30th. Instead of driving straight to the venue using McDonald Cartier Highway and then Queen Elizabeth Expressway, I decided to drive up north and go through scenic route via Mattawa and North Bay and then travel south via Barrie, Toronto and finally to Mississauga. The route was breathtaking with all the fall colors and numerous rivers with Canadian Indian names.
Following day I attended, the show of the year….Wilfy Nite in Canada 2005…..
Next day morning, I checked out of the hotel and headed to one of the nature’s wonders….Niagara Falls. It is approximately an hours drive from Toronto on QEW and then on to Hwy 420 to the actual falls. I have been there few times before but each time I keep admiring the sheer beauty and immensity of the falls. Can you imagine, 600,000 US gallons per second falling from a height of 167 feet across a rim that measures 2,600 feet!!!
It is The Niagara falls, located in the province of Ontario, Canada, along the US border, close to Buffalo, NY. It is called Niagara, a Iroquois Indian word “Onguiaahra” means “the strait”. It is Niagara river that flows and becomes the falls and flows another 15 miles before joining Lake Ontario.
Great Lakes – Michigan, Huron, Superior and Erie, the outflow from these lakes empty into Niagara river, which finally becomes the Falls.
There are three falls that are associated with this river, two on the US side, American Falls and Bridal Veil Falls and the larger Horseshoe Falls on the Canadian side.
There are tunnels under the Canadian falls for tourists to get a closer look. The thunderous sound and the sight of the water falling from above and in front is worth a visit to these tunnels.
Honeymooners always have dreamt of visiting the Niagara Falls, of course it is the water and the sheer elegance of the falls that attracts them. Approximately 20 miles from the falls is Niagara-on the-Lake, home of world famous Shaw Festival, specializing in George Bernard Shaw plays.
After photographing the falls, I decided to head back to Ottawa, this time using the main expressways. Here are some photographs of the fall colors and the falls.
