The only ‘One-Way’ Solution for Traffic Woes in City – MLA Lobo
Mangaluru: “For the smooth flow of traffic and to avoid traffic congestion, the police should take measures for one-way traffic in some of the places in the city, and to implement this there should not be any political pressure on the traffic police. Everyone should co-operate with the traffic police in this regard”, said MLA J R Lobo in a meeting on traffic system improvement held at the MCC, Mangala Hall here on April 25.
Lobo further said, “In the past, in some areas in the city there was one-way traffic system. But due to some political pressure, the one-way traffic system was stopped. In Bengaluru in some areas with one-way traffic there is no “U” turn for more than 5 Km, the traffic movement is very systematic. In Mangaluru due to the increase in vehicles, we are facing severe problems in the movement of traffic. There is a need to adopt a one-way traffic system in Mangaluru city to avoid traffic congestion”.
Lobo also said, “In some areas on the four-lane roads, there are spaces for “U” turns within short distances. On the airport road, at Yeyyadi, there are open spaces on the road dividers for “U” turns every 50 meters which lead to accidents. Some private buses are parked on the side of the road during the night and are also washed there. We have noticed some buses being repaired on the side which causes great inconvenience to the pedestrians. Unauthorized parking, as well as garages operating on the side of the road, should be vacated and strict action should be taken against those who use the government land for their personal work”.
Parking facilities
In the city, due to the parking on footpaths and no parking zones, pedestrians face problems. The MCC should identify empty places in the city and take measures for creating parking facilities. At Nanthur a small empty place as been converted into parking space which is utilised by the public. The public should also join hands with the MCC”.
Sign boards and Painting on Zebra Crossing
DCP Crime and Traffic Dr Sanjeev Patil speaking on the occasion said, “In the main roads of the city vehicles have drastically increased making it difficult for people to cross the road. The MCC should take the initiative to erect signboards and paint zebra crossings. The MCC should also provide a tow truck to the traffic police to tow vehicles from ‘No Parking’ zones”.
Responding to the request of DCP Dr Sanjeev Patil Mayor Kavitha Sanil said, “The work of painting Zebra crossings and erecting signboards has already started”.
Mayor Kavitha Sanil also said, “Demolition of illegal petty shops in the city is in progress. We need the support from the police to carry out the demolition drive. The MCC has also cancelled the licences of Massage parlours and skill games in the city. In this regard, the police should take necessary action against those who run massage parlours and skill games illegally.
Responding to the Mayor Dr Sanjeev Patil said, “ACP Traffic will work as a nodal officer during the demolition of illegal petty shops in the city. Regarding the massage parlours and places holding skills games we will inform the local police stations to take action.”
Changing of school timings
Mayor Kavitha Sanil said there is severe traffic congestion during the morning and evening school timings. If the timings will be changed for every school and colleges we can avoid the traffic jam. Responding to the Mayor, MLA Lobo said, “Such issues should be discussed with the district administration. The MCC should submit a memorandum to change the school timings.
One of the journalists said, “Instead of changing timings, it is better to inform the school authority to keep their gates open for vehicles dropping and picking up students. Since most of the parents park their vehicle on the road and drop their children to school. If the school authorities will allow the vehicles inside the school compound the traffic problems can be avoided to some extent near the school zones.”
Mayor Kavitha Sanil also said, “Every month school representatives will be called for a meeting on traffic issues in the MCC. We have already removed the flexes, banners, and buntings. For religious banners, permission will be given only for a maximum of 3 days, for other flexes/banners permission will not be given”.
Deputy Mayor Rajaneesh and MCC Commissioner Mohammed Nazir were also present.
Congestion and commotion caused by the ever-increasing traffic is a chronic problem in every city and in every country. Particularly in the developing world, while the population is growing faster than the developed world, the narrow roads look narrower than before and regardless how many police men and women are kept controlling the traffic on the roads, the situation will remain uncontrollable. Some of the immediate ways to control the traffic is the following:- a) At least, once or twice a week when the road traffic is more, try and convert the dual traffic in the major city area make… Read more »
Mr Lobo, you are talking about garages operating on roadsides. First of all I have requested your office some time back and I have requested Local Corporator Sabitha Misquith, previous 2 Police Commissioners office, ACP.DCP and Inspectors regarding Garage near Sandesha,(near Nanthoor Circle). How many close calls are coming at that spot with container trucks changing lane. Speeding highway vehicles are suddenly changing lanes when they reach the spot when they see parked vehicle halfway into the lane.
