Mangaluru: Celebrated annually across the world on September 27, this year ‘World Tourism Day’ was more relevant as it addressed the importance of the Tourism sector in providing jobs and opportunities, mostly for women and youth, in rural as well as big cities amid the Covid-19. The day also highlighted the unique role of the Tourism sector in preserving cultural and natural heritage all around the world apart from being a leading employer and economic pillar. Entrepreneurs of the tourism sector like never before to drive recovery, after bearing a heavy blow on their economy courtesy the Covid-19 pandemic. The theme for World Tourism Day 2020 is “Tourism and Rural Development” as domestic tourism is expected to return before international tourism, according to the United Nations World Tourism Organisation’s foresight.

Let me begin this column with a thought-provoking quote “To Move, to Breathe, to Fly, to Float, To Gain all while you give, To Roam the Roads of lands Remote, To travel is to live. This year’s World Tourism Day theme being, “Tourism and Rural Development”, I feel proud to mention that, ever since Globe Travels promoted Cruise ships to Mangaluru way back 1980’s, I have tried my best to promote the rural development by taking the foreigners to Bengre area to promote tourism and to build the school building block to the poor students. Even though we are still in the pandemic, I keep in constant touch with the cruise companies to get the cruise ships back to Mangaluru in 2021 and I am very hopeful of the same” added William. He wishes that people of Mangaluru do realize the value of life and be safe by maintaining the social distance and by wearing masks to reduce the Pandemic to have better days soon.
