The second Day of the Feast is Celebrated at Attur St. Lawrence Basilica

Karkala: On January 27 marked the second day of the feast of St. Lawrence at the Basilica of Attur. There were three masses celebrated during the day.

The first mass, at 10:00 AM, was presided over by Msgr. Very Rev. Fr. Ferdinand Gonsalves, the Vicar General of the Diocese of Udupi. The second mass, held at noon, was celebrated by Fr. Rupesh Madtha, editor of Rakno magazine, and the final mass of the day was led by Fr. Lawrence D’Souza from the Diocese of Shimoga.

Special prayers were offered for the sick and suffering during all the masses. These prayers included anointing their foreheads and the laying on of hands.

Later in the evening, a Tulu Yakshagana based on the life of St. Lawrence was performed by the Athithi troupe. Renowned Tulu artist Aravind Bolar participated in the Yakshagana, captivating the audience with his performance. Rev. Fr. Alban D’Souza, the Rector of the Shrine, expressed his gratitude to everyone for their wholehearted cooperation.

Thousands of devotees visited the shrine, and many walked miles as a vow to St. Lawrence. They participated in devotions by lighting candles, praying before the miraculous statue, and visiting the nearby pond. Approximately 200 volunteers rendered valuable services at various counters, while police personnel ensured law and order. More than 20 priests were available throughout the day to administer the sacrament of confession, allowing the faithful to partake in this spiritual blessing.

Two books were released after the first mass. Fr. Valerian Fernandes authored a book on the Way of the Cross, and George Castelino released the 14th edition of Karye Sobhann, a guide to leading ceremonies.

Looking ahead to tomorrow January 28, ten masses are scheduled. The main mass will be celebrated in Kannada at 5:30 PM and will be presided over by Very Rev. Dr. Lawrence Mukkuzhy, the Bishop of Belthangady. The last mass of the day is scheduled for 10:00 PM
