Thousands Pay Their Last Respects to IPS officer Madhukar Shetty

Udupi: IPS officer Madhukar Shetty’s body arrived from Bengaluru to Udupi district on Saturday, December 29 late night. The body was brought to Mangalore international airport on a special flight where the peoples’ representatives and police officials received it and paid homage.

From Mangaluru the mortal remains were taken to Yadadi the hometown of Madhukar Shetty. The district administration along with the district police had made all arrangements for public viewing. Thousands of people paid their tribute to Madhukar Shetty.

K Madhukar Shetty passed away in Hyderabad on Friday. He was undergoing treatment at the Continental Hospital for the last three days.

He was Deputy Director of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy (NPA), Hyderabad. Shetty is survived by wife Suvarna C, a daughter and two brothers.

Born on December 17, 1971, Madhukar did his MA in Sociology from JNU, Delhi. He joined IPS in 1999. He worked as ASP Bengaluru Rural district and later as SP of Chamarajanagar and Chikkamagaluru. He also worked in the Task Force to capture Veerappan and as SP of the Anti-Naxal Force.

Shetty worked as DCP traffic (East) for a brief period and was posted as SP Lokayukta, Bengaluru City. It was during his stint as SP that Lokayukta police arrested Y Sampangi, then MLA, for bribery. He supervised the investigation into the KIADB compensation scam. He booked former minister Katta Subramanya Naidu and his son Katta Jagadish.

Shetty went on sabbatical for five years and did his PhD in Public Administration from Rockefeller College of Public Affairs and Policy, University at Albany in New York.

He was hospitalised for over a week on a suspected case of H1N1 infection-induced pneumonia. He underwent heart surgery on Wednesday and was on life support. He passed away at the hospital on Friday at around 8.30 p.m.
