Three CFAL Students Qualify for International Math & Science Olympiads
Mangaluru: Addressing the media persons during a press meet held at Centre For Advanced Learning (CFAL), Mangaluru, Ms Severine Rosario-Principal, CFAL said, “Three students from Mangaluru have qualified for the selection camp of the International Olympiads. And we are proud to say that, all the three students are studying at CFAL. These students are selected to prestigious third stage of Mathematics, and Biology Olympiad programs i.e. orientation cum Selection Camps – 2019. These students are eligible to attend a three to four-week orientation cum selection camp (OCSC) in Homi Bhaba Centre for Science Education & Research in Mumbai from where the International team gets selected”.
Also speaking on the occasion, Vijay Moras, Program Coordinator, CFAL said, “On the basis of aggregate scores in OCSC, the top 4 to 6 students selected at the end of the camp will represent India at the International Olympiads. They will be accompanied by two prominent teachers and an observer. Although many private entities conduct various exams called Olympiads, this is the only official Olympiad conducted by the Government of India, Ministry of Human Resources that leads to the International level. The participation in such competitive examinations can motivate students with Math and Science aptitude to nourish and excel in their field of interest”.
DETAILS OF STUDENTS SELECTED:
Agney Gautham X Std: One among the 35 students from the country selected in Biology Olympiad. Although he is in class 10, he competed with class 11 and class 12 students and has been selected.
Shreyas Pai XII Std: He is one among the 35 students from the country selected in Biology Olympiad. He had been selected for the camp last year (2018) in Biology Olympiad. He was the topper of Karnataka in biology Olympiad in 1st stage.
Anish Hebbar XII Std: He is one among the 24 students selected from the country in the XII std. category. He had been selected for the camp last year (2018) in Mathematics Olympiad. He is also selected for APMO 2019 (The Asian Pacific Mathematics Olympiad), which was held on March 12th, 2019 and waiting for the results.

Homi Bhabha Centre for Science education is the nodal centre of the country for Olympiad programs. www.hbcse.tifr.res.in/olympiads. The Olympiads Examinations are conducted in subjects, physics, chemistry, mathematics, biology, junior science and astronomy. The broad goals are to promote equity and excellence in science and mathematics education from primary school to undergraduate college level, and encourage the growth of scientific literacy in the country.
STAGES OF OLYMPIAD:
The National Olympiad starts with an examination held at nearly 1400 schools across the country and culminates with the international Olympiads at different corners of the world. The national level examinations are designed to assess the conceptual understanding, logical reasoning, laboratory skills, and above all, ability to apply problem-solving skills to novel situations, both theoretical and experimental.
