Three More Indira Canteens to Open in Mangaluru Benefitting Labourers & Working Class
Mangaluru: Just because the name had former Prime Minister of India Indira Gandhi on the Indira Canteens, the then Karnataka BJP government did not show much interest and support, and now that Congress is back at the helm of the state government, they are planning to start more Indira canteens in the state, including Mangaluru.
With the state’s heightened focus on expanding Indira Canteens, the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) is also planning to open more outlets in the city. The city corporation opened a master kitchen and five Indira Canteens in its jurisdiction at Urwa Stores, near Lady Goschen Hospital, Pumpwell, Kavoor and Surathkal in March 2018. Sai Hospitality Services, a Karwar-based firm, has been given the contract to supply food items to the five canteens. Now, the urban local body is all set to open three more outlets at Kuloor, Bunder and Baikampady soon.
Meanwhile, the city corporation has been directed by urban development and town planning minister Byrathi Suresh, who recently held a review meeting in Mangaluru, to explore possibilities of opening more Indira Canteens in the city, so that more labourers and other working-class people benefit. Government MCC commissioner Anand CL said that three new canteens are proposed at Kuloor Junction, the fishing wharf at Bunder and near APMC Yard in Baikampady as the areas have the presence of a large number of daily wage workers, fishermen, construction workers, migrant labourers and street vendors.
“All the five Indira Canteens that are functioning at present are located in populated areas and help construction workers, students, daily wage workers and others working in private sectors,” he said.
