To DOCS With LOVE from DOCS! IMA honours 4 Deans of Medical Institutions on ‘Teachers’ Day’
Mangaluru : Quoting Dr APJ Abdul Kalam-“If a country is to be corruption free and become a nation of beautiful minds, I strongly feel there are three key societal members who can make a difference. They are the father, the mother and the teacher.”, I can say that Teachers are the most responsible and important members of society because their professional efforts affect the fate of the Earth. And like one author who said,”The true teacher defends his/her pupils against his own personal influence. He/she inspires self-trust. He/she guides their eyes from himself/herself to the spirit that quickens him/her. He/she will have no disciples.
And with great love towards the Teachers, Indian Medical Association-Mangaluru Chapter for the FIRST time in the history of this IMA’s existence here organized “Teachers’ Day’celebrations on 5 September at IMA Hall, Hampankatta-Mangaluru. Kudos to the energetic and dynamic president of IMA Dr Sachidanand Rai for his initiative in hosting this event celebrating Teachers. On the occasion four deans of four different medical institutions in Mangaluru were felicitated for their contribution in health care field and their teaching service to their students.

Yes, parents are a child’s first teacher who gives them life lessons and after them comes the Guru or teacher who leads the child ahead in life. In our young and impressionable years, our teachers played a very important role– they have been our role models, our inspiration, and parent-figures outside of our home who taught us many lessons about life. At times they might be tough on us but, in hindsight, it was only to mould and shape our talents, to make us fight our fears and to work on our weaknesses. In fact, a good teacher not only imparts knowledge to their students but they inspire, encourage and instill curiosity to find solutions to problems. To honour these remarkable people in our lives, Teachers’ Day is celebrated as an important day world wide on different dates/months, but in India “Teachers’ Day” is celebrated annually on September 5 which also marks Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan’s birth anniversary.
The Teachers’ Day celebration was inaugurated by lighting of the lamp by the chief guest along with other dignitaries on the dais, namely- Dr Dr Vinay Kumar V- Treasurer, IMA-Mangaluru; Dr Habeeb Rahman- President-IMA Trust; Dr K R Kamath- Secretary-IMA Trust; Dr A Divakar Rao- Presidenyt, AMC Trust; Dr B Sandeep Rai- Secretary, AMC Trust; and Dr Annayya Kulal M- President Elect, IMA Mangaluru. A brief description on Teachers’ Day was delivered by Dr Habeeb Rahman, which was followed by the moment of the evening, felicitating the four Teachers/Deans, namely- Dr Prof Dr Jayaprakash Alva (Dean-Father Mullers Medical College-Mangaluru); Prof Dr Ashok Hegde (Dean-A J Institute of Medical Sciences-Mangaluru); Prof Dr M Venkatraya Prabhu ( Dean- Kasturba Medical College-Mangaluru) ; and Prof Dr P S Prakash ( Dean- K S Hegde Medical Academy (Kshema)- Mangaluru.
Introduction/citation of Dr J P Alva was read by Dr Prithvi Shetty; Dr Prakash P S by Dr Shuaib Ahmed; Dr M V Prabhu by Dr Prakash Harishchandra; and Dr Ashok Hegde by Dr Ullasa Shetty. The IMA bulletin ‘Medilore’ was released on the occasion by the chief guest, with Dr Devdas Rai at the helm of it. Following the felicitations, all the four Deans expressed their thoughts, and thanked IMA for recognizing their service of teaching in the field of Health Care. In his inaugural address Prof Dr P S Yadapadithaya complimented the doctors of IMA for recognizing the senior doctors of IMA and honouring them on this auspicious occasion of Teachers’ Day.
He further said, “Teaching is the Mother of all profession, and its one of the noblest profession. The biggest challenge for any teacher is capturing each student’s attention, and conveying ideas effectively enough to create a lasting impression. As a teacher, to tackle this challenge effectively, you should implement innovative ideas that make the classroom experience much more lovable for your students. Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire. Wherever you find something extraordinary, you’ll find the fingerprints of a great teacher. When it comes to profession of a doctor, they should have a humane culture, and also skills matter. Doctors should have good relationship with patients, have role clarity, be rapport, have resilience, among other qualities. We should also know that teacher is also a human being, and we can’t expect more than what they can deliver”.
The vote of thanks was proposed by Dr Vinay Kumar V, and the programme was compered by Dr Sudhindra Rao. In conclusion, “Let us remember: One book, one pen, one child, and one teacher can change the world.” -Long Live the TEACHERS!
