Toor Dal Price Should not exceed Rs 130 per kg – Khader

Mangaluru: Minister for Food and Public distribution U T Khader held a press meet at Eden’s Club here, on July 6.

Addressing the media persons, Minister Khader said that the prices of basic commodities such as edible oil, dal and sugar should not be increased and that the state food department has released an order to maintain the prices. “We will review the rates every three months. Retail shops should not keep more than 50 quintals of stock. If the stock is more than 50 quintals, we will seize it. Some retailers stock goods and charge a high price. Wholesalers at the gram level are allowed to store 1000 quintals and in the city, a maximum of only 2000 quintals is allowed to be stored. If anyone stores more than the allowed quantity, the government will seize it and take action on them,” said Khader.

In the state, 65% people depend on toor dal which is used every day. From July 8, the price of toor dal will be fixed. The Food Department has discussed the issue and has fixed the rate at Rs 130 per kg. “If people go to any vendor to buy toor dal and the vendor charges more, the customer should question the vendor. After three months, when the new stock arrives, the prices will come down. In Bengaluru, we have found some retailers fixing the price for toor dal at Rs 315, giving a discount as ‘Ramadan offer’ and then selling it for Rs 200. Retailers are cheating the people by fixing a high price with their own stickers. There will not be any extra charges for any quality. There will also not be first class or second class dal. Toor dal will be sold for Rs 130 and the public should be aware of the price.”

Khader also said that there is enough stock of toor dal in the state. Retailers cannot sell toor dal for more than Rs 130. As far as sugar is concerned, there is a variation in price every month and the price will be fixed accordingly. “We have made the best rules and guidelines for malls and multinational companies regarding storage of stock. Retailers did not have guidelines until now, and so we have introduced guidelines for them,” he added.
