Torrential Rains: Special Attention for Health Issues – Ivan D’Souza

Mangaluru: “On May 29, heavy rains lashed our district putting lives out of gear and causing damage to property. Two people lost their lives. Many people panicked due to floods. The district administration has taken all necessary measures to prevent such incidents in future. The Chief Minister called the DC thrice to learn about the situation in Dakshina Kannada and ordered to provide compensation to the families of those who lost their lives. I would also like to thank the police who worked round the clock to rescue people”, said Chief Whip Ivan D’Souza in a press meet held at his office here, on May 30.

Addressing the mediapersons, Ivan said, “Today, Deputy Commissioner Sasikanth Senthil has handed over Rs 5 lakh cheques to the families of the deceased. The DC will also start distributing compensation to those who have lost their property in the floods. When asked why Mangaluru was flooded, DC said that the water which was supposed to flow to the Netravati River reversed due to high tide leading to floods in the city. Due to the floods, many houses collapsed. In Puttur and Sullia, damage to property was minimum. In Moodbidri, one woman died due to a lightning strike and many houses were damaged.”

Ivan further said that some rainwater drains were blocked because of construction. The DC has formed a committee to study the cause and impact of the flooding and it will submit a report back to him within three days. Blocked drains will be opened once the DC gets the report.

“Jeppinamogeru has also submerged and efforts are on to clear the water. Ganji Kendras have been opened in 7 places. Many labourers who have come from other states and staying in tents have been shifted to safer places. The government is also providing food and shelter to those who are affected by the floods. Indira canteen will be also utilized by increasing the quantity of food. If anyone feels unsafe in their houses, they can contact the DC so that they will be provided temporary shelter,” he added.

Ivan also said that he has already instructed the DC to give special attention to health care. He said, “Due to torrential rains and stagnant water, people are prone to various diseases. Free blood tests should be done in hospitals. The NDRF and SDRF teams have already reached Mangaluru to cope up with the situation.”
