Total Ban on Plastic in City Effective July

Mangaluru: In compliance with a government notification, a total ban of plastic which does not conform to required specifications, according to city mayor Harinath.

Speaking on the occasion of launching cloth carry-bags being distributed free to citizens on Wednesday, he said that the city body had decided to distribute one lakh free cloth bags through school-children in the first phase.

As a token of the launch, he handed over a bag each to the deputy mayor, senior corporators and opposition leader.

As the first phase, 15,000 bags have been purchased through tender. Initially, they will be distributed to homes to through four schools.

In all, a lakh bags will be distributed to as many homes. He urged the citizens to totally shun the use of plastic and help to keep the city tidy and clean.

When a few corporators queried if the ban would apply to hoardings and flex signs, Harinath said that a high court verdict was being awaited in this regard.
