‘Treat Every Human, Humanly’-Minister Ramesh at NABH Accreditation of IH
“Every human being including poor must be treated humanly by physicians!- This means that every human being that comes into the hospital without distinction of age, sex, race, skin color, physical or mental ability, Rich or Poor, language, religion, political view, or national or social origin possesses an inalienable and untouchable dignity, and everyone, the individual as well as the state, is therefore obliged to honor this dignity and protect it ” said Ramesh Kumar- State Minister for Health and Family Welfare, at the Indian Hospital and Heart Institute Ltd NABH Accreditation Certificate Handing Over Ceremony held on 15 September 2016 at 9 am at the hospital premises.
Mangaluru: This is just another feather in the cap for Indiana Hospital & Heart Institute Ltd. for being the First Corporate Referral Hospital and Third Hospital in Mangaluru to be accredited by the National Accreditation Board for Hospitals & Healthcare Providers (NABH). The Hospital whose vision is “To be recognized as a global destination in health-care”, and whose Mission is ” To provide the global standards in healthcare to the public through professional expertise, quality services with special focus on patient safety”, is beaming with pride being accredited by NABH and moving forward on a journey towards Excellence; excellence in patient care, quality treatment and adopting good practices every singe day.
To mark this proud achievement, and share the joy of being accredited by NABH, a joyous celebration was held on 15 September 2016 at 9 am at the hospital premises. Today was indeed a joyous moment for the management and staff of Indiana Hospital, because when the hospital was launched in the year 2014 they had a strong commitment to implement the quality standards prescribed by the NABH, and their efforts and dreams came true when the hospital was granted the coveted full NABH Accreditation on 3 July 2016, a honor available to only 403 hospitals, among the several thousand hospitals in India. Team Mangalorean extends congratulations and best wishes to Indiana Hospital and Heart Institute on this prestigious achievement.
The celebration began with a two-minutes silent prayer, followed by the welcome address and briefing about NABH and its benefits by Dr Yusuf Kumble- Managing director of the Hospital, where he said , “Accreditation in healthcare goes beyond just infrastructure for a hospital. It is about process and outcome. So far only 403 hospitals in whole of India have been accredited by NABH, and Indiana Hospital being the 385th in the list. Our hard work was rewarded when NABH accredited the Hospital in July 2016. Indiana Hospital will use this as a tool to make a difference in the healthcare scenario in Mangaluru by ensuring the best possible outcomes for its patients”.
The NABH Accreditation Certificate Handover to MD Dr Yusuf Kumble was done by State Minister for Health and Family Welfare, Ramesh Kumar in the presence of other dignitaries on the dais namely- Minister Ramanath Rai, MLA JR Lobo, Congress Chief Whip Ivan D’Souza, Dr M Ramakrishna Rao-District Health Officer, Mangaluru, Dr Mohammed Ismail-MD, Physician at Indiana Hospital, MCC Corporator Praveen Chandra Alva, Abdul Lathief- Vice Chairman, Indiana Hospital, and Prof. Dr Ali Kumble-Chairman, Indiana Hospital.
In his address to the audience sending a strong message to the hospitals and physicians, Minisiter Ramesh Kumar said, ” Let me use the word -Hallucination, which is a profound distortion in a person’s perception of reality, typically accompanied by a powerful sense of reality. An hallucination may be a sensory experience in which a person can see, hear, smell, taste, or feel something that is not there. Similarly by just receiving a NABH Accreditation is not enough, we need to follow the guidelines, rules and regulations, thereby making it a reality. Sad part in India is that there is no law or strict punishment for doctors who indulge in malpractice-that’s the reason we have too many patients dying due to physicians negligence. The duty of a doctor is to treat the patient with love, care along with proper treatment, but many a times it’s not happening”
“Even though lots of funds are being sanctioned by the government for better care and treatment of the patients, the money is abused and not utilized properly. There is no fear of God, where humans are treated unequally. We need to start treating every human equally. Every human being must be treated humanly by physicians!- This means that every human being that comes into the hospital without distinction of age, sex, race, skin color, physical or mental ability, language, religion, political view, or national or social origin possesses an inalienable and untouchable dignity, and everyone, the individual as well as the state, is therefore obliged to honor this dignity and protect it ” added Ramesh.
“When a patient is brought into the hospital, treat that patient irrespective of caste or creed, rich or poor first and foremost, and then decide on how much to charge for the treatment. Hospitals and doctors should follow the ethical standards. Doctors also need to travel and treat people in remote and village areas, and not just in the city. If I find that if any physician or for that matter any hospital is found practicing unethical standards while treating a patient, I will see that they are punished severely until my tenure and also till Congress government is in power. We need to treat human beings as humans. While I compliment Indiana Hospital for being Accredited by NABH, I am confident that they will abide by the standards and rules as directed by NABH and bring name and fame for the hospital, and also make me proud being the State health Minister. My support and encouragement is always there when the hospital need it. Best of luck” added Ramesh Kumar.
Although as per the agenda, few other dignitaries were suppose to speak during the ceremony, but due to a busy schedule for the day, Minister Ramesh urged to skip all the rest of the speeches and to go ahead with the vote of thanks- and that came as good news for the media personnel, including the guests, who didn’t had to be there for long listening to few more lengthy speeches. Prof. Dr Ali Kumble proposed the vote of thanks, while the programme was professionally compered by Mytreya, from Hospital HR department.
About National Accreditation Board for Hospitals & Healthcare Providers (NABH) :
NABH is a constituent board of Quality Council of India, setup to establish and operate accreditation program for healthcare organizations. NABH is an institutional member as well as Board member of the International Society for Quality in Health Care (ISQua) and the hospitals accredited by NABH will have international recognition. Indiana Hospital took 18 months to implement its quality protocols.

Accreditation ensures that the healthcare organization is managed in an ethical manner and displays professionalism in the management of affairs of the unit; The organization has a system in place to provide a safe and secure environment including plans to deal with fire and other emergencies; Organization will have a documented procedure for recruiting, inducting and continuous professional training and development for staff; There is a process of credentialing and privileging to medical professionals and nursing professionals permitted to provide patient care without supervision; NABH accreditation can attract qualified personnel, who prefer to serve in an accredited organizations.
