Trees Uprooted Due to Strong Winds in City, Aug 14 Holiday for Schools and Colleges
Mangaluru: A number of trees were uprooted in various places and large branches were broken due to strong winds and heavy rains at Kalpane, Kulshekar, Maravoor, Kodikkal and Balmatta here on August 13.
According to the forecast by the Meteorological department, heavy rain was predicted in Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Kodagu on August 13 and 14. The Deputy commissioners of DK, Udupi and Kodagu have declared a holiday for schools and PU colleges on August 13. In spite of holidays being declared, some Schools did not follow the orders of the DC and held classes. Complaints by parents to the concerned authorities had later compelled the school authorities to declare holiday on August 13.
On August 13, at around 6:15 pm due to the strong winds and rain many trees were uprooted in Kulshekar and Paldane area. Large branches of some trees were also broken due to the strong wind. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.
Locals immediately informed the police and also the fire service. Power was shut down to avoid any untoward incidents. The Kadri traffic police and the fire service reached the spot and helped the locals to clear the trees fallen on the road. Traffic movement was disrupted for some time.
Keeping in mind the safety of the students, deputy commissioner Sasikanth Senthil has announced a holiday for schools and Colleges also on August 14.
The Beat police have also got into action and requested the beat members of their area to coordinate in case of emergencies.
Speaking to mangalorean.com fire officer of Kadri Fire station Sunil Kumar said, “Due to the strong winds many trees have been uprooted in many places such as Kodikal, Maravoor, Balmatta, Kulshekar, Kalpane and Paldane. We have cleared two huge trees uprooted at Kulshekar and Kalpane. In other places, MCC has also joined hands with us to clear the trees.
