TRV Stages Protest against Pathetic Condition of Kadri Market
Mangaluru: Tulunada Rakshana Vedike staged a protest in front of the Kadri Market on November 24, against the Mangalore City corporation for not addressing the problems in and around the Market.
Addressing the protesters, President of the Tulunada Rakshana Vedike Yogish Shetty Jeppu said, “Kadri area is famous for various reasons, it has temples, a church, Schools, Hospitals and Marriage halls. In 2000, the Kadri Market was shifted and built in a hurry but now the market is in a pathetic state. There are no proper drainage and parking facilities. Some shops inside the market are too small without any safety. The women-Health and delivery hospital which was in operation until 1980 was converted into meat stalls. During the construction of the market, rules were not followed and the market was built in a hurry. Three people lost their lives in the area because of accidents”.
Yogish further said, “Due to lack of seating arrangements women selling fish are facing problems. Lack of toilet facilities, the bus-stop in front of the Kadri Market which has collapsed is not yet reconstructed. The government is getting more than Rs 9 lakh income from the market but the funds have not been utilized for the maintenance of the market”.
Social activist Gerald Towers said, “To provide the plot for MESCOM, the Kadri Market was shifted from its place. I had predicted that people will lose their lives due to the unscientific construction of the market and the surrounding area. From the past 16 years, there is no proper footpath but all of a sudden for the inauguration of the Congress office, they laid interlocks. School children cross the road to board the bus but there is no proper footpath or Zebra crossing in the area. The fish selling area in the market is not safe. Recently a lecturer died in a road accident due to the negligence in the construction of the road work. The government is generating Rs 75,000 per month from the Kadri market, but not a single penny has been spent for the development of the Market in the last 16 years. If the market will not be developed soon, we will stage a protest in front of MCC”, warned Towers.
Vendors of Kadri Market, members of Tulunada Rakshana Vedike and other locals were also present.
