Tulu Course for Cops from Other Districts in Mangaluru

Mangaluru: Dakshina Kannada has a special attachment towards Tulu. Speaking in Tulu strikes a familiar chord and creates instant bonding. That is the magic that the language has.

The police department being law-keepers and protectors play an important role in public life. Among the approximate 800 cops serving under the city police commissionerate limits, about 30% are said to be hailing from non-Tulu speaking districts.

None of them understands Tulu, Konkani or Beary language which are commonly spoken here. It may be partly because of the fact that not many from the city and the district opt to join the police force.

Towards making the force more people-friendly, commissioner Chandra Sekhar has taken keen interest in having his force coached in Tulu.

This, he feels, would facilitate their communication with the common people. The commissioner deserves commendation for this great initiative.

During a recent visit to the University College at Hampankatta, the commissioner had enquired of the college authorities if such an arrangement could be made.

This motivated principal Dr Udayakumar Irvattur to chalk out a plan. As a result of it, the first course lasting ten days was launched in the commissionerate premises on Thursday, June 16. All police personnel hailing from other districts will be coached in spoken Tulu.

The first batch, which will go on up to June 27, has 22 personnel. The forthcoming courses will be held from time to time.

Dr Yatish, a commerce lecturer of the University College and also the NCC officer, is the convener of the project. Classes are given by Dr Vishwanath Badikana and Dr Kishore Kumar Sheni.

Emphasis is given to the singular and plural ways of respectful words, said a trainee. He is confident about picking up grammar and proper way of communication in Tulu.
