Two Dead, Two Severely Injured in Container-car Collison near Sullia
Sullia: The stretch between this town and Madikeri on Mani-Mysuru state highway 88 was a driver’s nightmare a few years ago. But after its widening and restoration, driving has been a very pleasant experience.
However, at the same time, the tendency to speed is also rampant. There are many danger zones on the Sampaje ghat road, as well some bends and curves between Sampaje and Sullia. Goonadka has earned a hazard tag during the past years. Many lives have been lost in the recent past.
A ghastly mishap claimed two lives on Monday, May 2. A container lorry had a head-on collision with a Maruti Omni car.
Maqbool, his wife Zuleikha and their son, from Kadanga village in Virajpet taluk of Kodagu, were travelling in the Omni car, owned by their neighbour Yusuf. While the family intended to go to Mangaluru for medical treatment of Salim, Yusuf wanted to be helpful by driving them in his car.
Upon collision near Goonadka, Yusuf, who was driving the car, and Maqbool, who was sitting next to him in the front seat, reportedly died on the spot. Zuleikha and Salim have been severely injured. After initial treatment, they were taken to Mangaluru.
As soon as their neighbours and relatives got the news, many of them arrived in different vehicles. When the mishap occurred in the morning, residents around are said to have rushed to the victims’ help and arrange for vehicles to shift the injured to hospitals.
Post-mortem examination of the deceased was conducted in the government hospital in Sullia.
