Two Kerala Students Killed, Three injured in RAK Accident

Ras Al Khaimah: Two Indian interns were killed and three others seriously injured in a road accident in Ras Al Khaimah early Tuesday, police said.

The deceased have been identified as Arjun Vimal Thampi (24), from Ernakulam and Athul Gopakumar Gopan (23), from Thiruvananthapuram, who were both working as interns in a hotel in Ras Al Khaimah, according to an official from the Indian Relief Committee in Ras Al Khaimah.

Lieutenant-Colonel Walid Mohammad Kanfish, director of Al Ma’murah police station, said the operations room received a call at dawn on Tuesday about an incident involving one car.

Police said the driver was driving at high speed on Ras Al Khaimah Bridge towards Al Nakheel area when he lost control of the vehicle after entering a roundabout. The car overturned and rolled several times and settled in the land in front of Civil Defence.

The five Indian interns, all in their 20s and from Kerala, were travelling in the same car, he said.

Two of them were killed on the spot, while the three other passengers sustained critical injuries and were taken to the nearest hospital for treatment.

Vinu Raveendram was seriously injured and admitted at Saqr Hospital. The two others were identified as Sreyas and Sanjay. All three were working in a travel and tours company.

The official said the five interns have been in the UAE for one year. None of the five had a driving licence.

He said the five have no family here and the next of kin are yet to be informed.

Police said the bodies of the deceased were moved to the hospital morgue so they could be handed over to their relatives for burial.

Lt-Col Kanfish appealed to drivers to abide by traffic rules to avoid such tragic accidents.
